Stick With Homemade Barbecue Sauce
Using the right barbeque sauce on your meat, poultry, or pork
can be the difference between a successful grilling experience and a so-so
experience. Barbeque sauce provides that extra something to grilled food that
makes barbequing such a great taste experience. With the right kind of sauce any
dish will be that much tastier.
But what makes a great barbeque sauce? We are all familiar with the different
brands and flavors that line the grocery store shelves, but are they really the
best choice for truly great barbeque taste. Judging by the amount of these
products sold every year most people are satisfied with what they provide. What
we must realize is that these grocery store bought sauces are watered down
versions of the homemade barbeque sauces that made bbq sauce popular in the
first place.
The foods you buy at a grocery store have been processed to retain a long shelf
life. Many times this is at the expense of more healthy ingredients. In store
bought barbeque sauce one of the main ingredients, sugar, has been replaced with
high fructose corn syrup which is much cheaper than natural sugar.
High fructose corn sugar is not the most healthy of food additives. It is a low
grade sugar substitute that turns almost instantly into fat. Your body does not
really metabolize it and has difficulty breaking it down so that when it gets to
the liver it has not changed its chemical makeup. This leads to the release of
high amounts of insulin which causes the corn sugar to be stored as fat.
If you are concerned about the foods you eat and the affect they have on your
health there is an easy way around this problem. Make you own barbeque sauce.
All the spices and other ingredients you need are readily available and instead
of having to live with high fructose corn syrup you can use natural cane or
brown sugar instead.
A basic barbeque consists of small portions of chili powder, black pepper and
melted butter. To these you can add tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and
onion powder. Mixing these ingredients together in different amounts and
combinations will give you a good base to start with. What gets added to it from
here is up to the chef. You can try lemon juice or hickory flavoring or any
number of other herbs, spices and flavorings that will make you barbeque
something special.
It may take several tries to get your barbeque sauce recipe just right, but
that’s part of the fun. Once you have it just the way you like it you will have
the type of sauce that other people talk about.
