Cooking Barbeque Ribs

Ribs are the ultimate barbeque food. If anyone mentions the word barbeque the first thing most of us picture is a rack of ribs slathered in barbeque sauce and the mess we make eating them.

But when it comes to cooking barbeque ribs there are some tips and trick that you can follow if you want them to turn out right. Many people just do not know how to cook them correctly and become intimidated by the thought of barbequing ribs.

The first thing to understand when cooking barbeque ribs is that it takes time. Ribs, no matter the kind, are best if you slow cook them. Slow cooking brings out the flavor and allows the ribs to become moist and tender. They should practically fall off the bone if done right.

There are several ways to pre-cook ribs.

• In the Oven - Bake them in the oven at a low to medium temperature. This is a good place to use a dry barbeque rub or barbeque marinade of some sort. Wrap them in foil and place them in a baking or roasting pan. Set your oven to 250-300 degrees and let them slowly cook for 2 to 4 hours.

• Boil them for an hour or two - You will need a large pot to do this. If you want you can use one part water to one part beer to boil the ribs in. Bring to a boil and slowly lower your ribs into the pot. Let them go for an hour or two and you will have tender juicy ribs ready to be grilled.

• Steam Your Ribs – If you have a large pot that has a removable colander and a lid you can steam your ribs for an hour or so. Use water and/or beer in the bottom of the pot, but just enough to come to the bottom of the colander when it is in the pot. Bring to a boil, lower the colander with the ribs into the pot and cover. Let steam for an hour or two and your ribs will be ready for the grill.

Once you have pre-cooked your ribs you can transfer them to your grill and let them grill for 5- 10 minutes. Once they have been grilled for 5-10 minutes brush on your barbeque sauce and let them grill a little while longer. Do not grill your ribs for any extended period of time with the bbq sauce as it will burn easily, ruining your ribs.

If you do not want to pre-cook your ribs then the best way to prepare them on the grill is over low heat to medium heat. You will need to segregate your grill into a hot side and a warm side. If you have a gas grill with multiple burners this is easy to accomplish by leaving one or more burners unlit. You can start by quickly placing your ribs over the hottest part of the grill for a few minutes. This is to seal in the juices. This should only take a maximum of 5 minutes. Once this is done move them to the lower heat and let them slowly cook. This slow cook should take 1-2 hours. Be sure to turn them frequently to prevent any burning. When you are about ready to remove them is the time to brush on any barbeque sauce. Let them heat for a few more minutes and then serve.

Cooking barbeque ribs can be as easy or as difficult as you want to make it. If you follow some of these simple tips you and your family and friends will be enjoying tender juicy ribs all summer long.
